The UNB Saint John Seawolves Football Club, which kicked off its inaugural Atlantic Football League (AFL) season in September 2009, is the product of much volunteer vision and effort over the past several years. Barry Ogden, President & General Manager of the Seawolves, foresees many benefits that will come to our local community and its young adults through this gridiron endeavour.
“Our goals are clear,” says Ogden. “We want to provide a means for 18-24 year old football players to continue to play the game that they love in their home community after they’ve graduated from high school. We want them to “think local” when they’re choosing where to get their post-secondary education and training. And at the same time, we want institutions like UNBSJ and NBCC-SJ to be enriched by the presence of these student-athletes. We see members of the Seawolves Football Club becoming role models for younger high school and minor football players. As mentors, as coaches for younger players, and through team & individual volunteer activities, we see the Seawolves Football program as a springboard for a group of dedicated student-athletes to contribute to our community.”
